Mexico is a large and geographically diverse country, which means that Mexico's climate varies greatly by region. In general, the north of the country is hot and dry, while the south is humid and tropical. Coastal areas are also subject to hurricanes and other severe weather conditions. The following describes Mexico's climate by region.

Hurricane season in Mexico

Hurricane season is the time of year when tropical storms are most likely to form in the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. In Mexico, hurricane season usually runs from June 1 to November 30. The peak of this season is between mid-September and mid-October. During this period, Mexico experiences an average of 2 to 4 hurricanes. But fortunately, not all of these storms make landfall.

The Yucatan Peninsula

The Yucatan Peninsula is located in southeastern Mexico. The climate in this region is tropical, with temperatures averaging 21-32 degrees Celsius. Yucatan can also be quite humid. Rainfall is quite erratic, but is usually highest in the months of June and July.

Baja California Peninsula

In northwestern Mexico lies the peninsula of Baja California. The climate in this region is desert-like, with temperatures averaging 14-28 degrees Celsius. However, it is important to note that the nights can be quite cool, so if you are visiting during the winter months, bring a coat.

Central Mexico

The central region of Mexico has a more temperate climate. Summers here are hot, with temperatures averaging 30 degrees Celsius. In winter, it is cool. Rainfall is sporadic and can often be quite heavy when it does happen. The wet season runs from May through October.

South-Central Mexico

South-central Mexico has a tropical climate that is hot and humid year-round. Temperatures here average 26 degrees Celsius, but it can feel much hotter because of the high humidity . There is little variation between seasons. This region is popular with beachgoers and birdwatchers alike.
